Trebrown Nurseries is Britain's foremost forestry tree nursery specialising in the largest collection of native trees ever to be grown anywhere in Britain. Primarily to supply conservation and re-wilding projects within the south-west region. Where we, where possible, select wild trees from the south-west for the south-west. We can supply outside our region, within the British mainland, but generally expect nurseries in other regions to do that. This collection is also the most important in terms of rare species, with some species being grown under special licence.
Founded in 2004 by Phil Markey, originally as an exotic plant and palm tree nursery in Cornwall, the business has now been turned over to producing forestry trees for planting. Phil’s passion for trees started at a very young age. He became expert in identification of European trees whilst still in school. He graduated university with a BSc Natural Science, majoring in botany, and specialising in the trees of the world. His early career was working in various private forestry companies, before achieving further qualifications as a mountain leader and the Royal Geographical Society’s Off-site Safety Management qualification. From there Phil has led a plethora of scientific expeditions through 66 countries over 30 years to some of the hardest-to-reach wilderness locations worldwide. Working with renowned botanical researchers from Kew, New York Botanical Garden, and many other botanical research institutions around the world. Phil was awarded a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (F.R.G.S.) for his expedition achievements worldwide.
The nursery still offers a few exotic species, offered in thier own section of the website, along with a selection of Tree-fern spore. As well as the main section listing all the native trees and shrubs of the south-west, there is also a section listing only the FRM commercial forestry trees for planting.
We supply wholesale or retail to anyone with a view to planting trees, be-it foresters, farmers, schools, gardeners, or social amenity groups. Our speciality though is for conservation and re-wilding projects, where we aim to conserve the many exceptionally rare species as part of their species recovery programs in the south-west.
The nursery remains a family run business where we pride ourselves on good service with good old fashioned standards of quality.
We produce, by far the widest range of native trees ever to be grown in the UK, grown by ourselves mainly from our own south-west provenance registered seed-stands and orchards. Seed is otherwise collected under special licence from conservation sites in the south-west. All our trees are fully traceable, from seed source to planting site, and plant passports, ensuring traceability accompany each and every species supplied.
We produce the main stock lines of forestry trees as bare-root whips. These are lifted and sent out during the autumn/winter planting season. However, we also produce our whole stock lines as cell-grown trees. Growing trees in cells ensures that trees have a root plug which is never damaged during the lifting process and extends the potential planting season to all months of the year. Rates of establishment of cell-grown trees are typically up to 20% better than with field grown (bare root) trees. You may purchase our cell-grown trees year-round directly from our website.
Plant supplier certificates are provided for forestry trees as regulated by FRM ( Forestry Reproductive Material Regulations 2002 ).
